As anticipation builds for the holiday season, the prospect of a white Christmas remains uncertain for many, particularly in the west of Galway. Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather warning for the region, predicting heavy downpours and the possibility of spot flooding, exacerbated by high spring tides.
This yellow warning, indicative of the first level of severity in Met Éireann’s three-tiered color-coded system, is in effect from 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday. Additionally, marine warnings for coastal winds are being issued for the weekend. A status yellow gale warning is in place from Erris Head to Malin Head, with southwest winds expected to reach gale force 8 until 8 pm on Saturday. From midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, gale force 6 winds are predicted along all Irish coasts.
Met Éireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly reported that daytime temperatures are slightly above normal, with no indication of an imminent cold snap. She remarked, “I am not even seeing any zero degrees out there,” dispelling hopes of a white Christmas. The coldest temperatures are anticipated in Ulster on Christmas Eve.
The detailed forecast reveals a mild and breezy Saturday afternoon with patchy drizzle in the south and west. Some sunshine is expected in the midlands and east, where it will remain dry. Dull or cloudy conditions are anticipated elsewhere, with patchy light rain or drizzle. Saturday night will bring dry conditions with a mix of cloud and clear spells.
Sunday is set to bring blustery rain to Connacht, west Ulster, and west Munster, potentially causing flooding in west Connacht due to high spring tides. Monday will see mostly cloudy conditions with scattered outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, mainly in Munster and south Leinster. The rest of the week is expected to be generally mild and windy, with occasional rain in the west and north, while dry weather prevails elsewhere. Widespread rain is suggested for the following weekend. As the countdown to Christmas continues, the dream of a white Christmas remains elusive for most, with weather conditions favoring milder and wetter patterns across the country.
