Emergency medical cards are granted without a means test under specific emergency circumstances. You can obtain one if you:

1. Terminal Illness: If you have a terminal illness and have been informed that you have 24 months or less to live.
2. End-of-Life Treatment: When you’re receiving end-of-life treatment, meaning you’ve been given less than 12 months to live.
3. Urgent Ongoing Care: When you require urgent ongoing care and need a medical card faster than standard processing allows.

Application Process

Only qualified healthcare professionals, such as doctors or consultants, can apply for an emergency medical card on your behalf. The application process varies depending on the nature of the emergency:

1. Terminal Illness: If you’re facing a terminal illness with 24 months or less to live, your hospital consultant will submit a Terminal Illness Medical Card Application Form to the HSE. Once processed, your medical card number becomes active within 24 hours, enabling immediate access to medical card services. Importantly, this card will never be reviewed or expire.
2. End-of-Life Treatment: If you’re receiving end-of-life treatment due to a terminal illness with less than 12 months to live, your social worker, consultant, or GP will send a medical report and an End-of-Life Treatment Medical Card Application Form to the HSE. A medical officer will expedite the application process, and like the terminal illness card, your medical card number becomes active within 24 hours, allowing prompt access to services. This card also remains free from reviews and expiration.
3. Urgent Ongoing Care: In situations where urgent ongoing care is required and you can’t wait for standard processing, you can receive a temporary medical card for six months. Your social worker, consultant, or GP will send a medical report along with a completed application form to the HSE. Once approved, you can expect your emergency medical card in the mail within ten days. However, your medical card number becomes active within 24 hours of application processing, ensuring immediate access to necessary care. It’s crucial to note that you’ll need to apply for a standard means-tested medical card before your emergency medical card expires, and the HSE will provide a reminder for this renewal.
